Colombia Student Visa 2026 — Requirements for Language Schools and Universities

The student visa is a V-type visa for foreigners enrolled in accredited Colombian educational institutions. It covers university programs, postgraduate studies, language schools, and vocational training. It is the cheapest visa to obtain but comes with the strictest limitation: no work authorization and no path to residency.

Who Qualifies

You qualify if you are accepted into a program at a Colombian educational institution that holds accreditation from the Ministry of Education (MOE). This includes public and private universities, technical schools, and formally accredited language programs. The institution must have a valid SNIES code (Sistema Nacional de Informacion de la Educacion Superior) or equivalent MOE certification.

Financial Requirements

The student visa requires proof of financial solvency rather than a monthly income threshold. The applicant or their sponsor must demonstrate funds equivalent to 10 SMLMV per month of study in bank balances:

  • 2024: 13,000,000 COP per month (~$3,611 USD)
  • Projected 2026: ~15,300,000 COP per month (~$4,250 USD)

For a 6-month language program, you would need to show approximately $25,500 USD in your bank account. For a 2-year master's degree, the requirement is significantly higher. A parent or sponsor can provide the financial backing with a notarized support letter.

Qualifying Schools

Types of institutions that qualify:

  • Universities: Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Nacional, EAFIT, Javeriana, and other SNIES-registered institutions
  • Language schools: Only those with MOE accreditation (ask for the certificate before enrolling)
  • Technical programs: SENA and accredited technical schools
  • Postgraduate programs: Master's and doctoral programs at accredited universities

Popular language schools that have historically maintained accreditation include Centro Colombo Americano, Universidad EAFIT language programs, and select private schools in Medellin and Bogota. Always verify current accreditation status directly with the institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study at a private Spanish language school?
Only if the school has formal accreditation from the Ministry of Education (MOE) or a valid SNIES code. Informal, unaccredited language schools are no longer accepted. Since 2024, visas for unaccredited schools are uniformly rejected.
Can I work while on a student visa?
The student visa does not authorize employment. If you need to work, you must apply for a separate work permit or switch to a different visa type.
Does the student visa count toward residency?
No. The student visa is a V-type (visitor) visa. Time spent on a student visa does not accumulate toward the 5-year residency requirement.
Can I apply from inside Colombia?
First-time student visa applications are generally expected to go through a consulate abroad. However, if you are already in Colombia on a valid visa and want to extend or change to a student visa, in-country applications are sometimes accepted.
What about ICETEX scholarships?
ICETEX is the Colombian government student loan and scholarship agency. If you receive an ICETEX-funded scholarship, your institution will typically assist with the visa application and provide the required documentation.
