About Colombia Mágico — Who We Are and Why We Built This
Colombia Mágico is a resource for people seriously considering a move to Colombia. Not vacation tips. Not digital nomad hype. Practical, experience-based guides for the things that actually matter when you are building a life here.
Who We Are
We are expats living in Colombia. We have gone through the visa process, opened bank accounts, rented apartments (and gotten burned by scams), navigated Migracion Colombia, figured out healthcare, and learned the hard way which ATMs charge the least and which neighborhoods actually make sense for foreigners.
This site exists because when we moved here, the information was scattered across Facebook groups, outdated Reddit threads, and blog posts written by people who visited for two weeks. We wanted one place with honest, current, comprehensive guides.
Why This Site
Colombia is not what most Americans think it is. The country has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. The cost of living is genuinely low, the healthcare system is surprisingly good, the weather ranges from eternal spring to tropical beach depending on where you land, and the people are among the warmest you will meet anywhere.
But it is also not the paradise that influencers sell. Renting an apartment as a foreigner is difficult and full of scams. The visa system got significantly harder in 2025-2026. Internet outside major cities can be unreliable. Certain medications are hard to find. Understanding estratos, propina voluntaria, pico y placa, and the difference between EPS and prepaid medicine takes time.
We built this site to give people the full picture — the good and the bad — so they can make an informed decision and avoid the mistakes we made.
How We Write
- No sponsored content. Nobody pays us to recommend anything. When we say Schwab is the best ATM card for Colombia, it is because we use it ourselves.
- No affiliate links. We do not earn commissions from recommendations. The information is free and unbiased.
- Experience-based. Every guide is written from first-hand experience living in Colombia, not from a hotel lobby in Cartagena.
- Updated regularly. Colombia changes fast. Visa rules, exchange rates, app availability, airline routes — we update guides when things change, not on a content calendar.
- Honest about downsides. If a city has a high crime rate, we say so. If a visa type is practically impossible to get, we say so. Sugarcoating helps nobody.
