Paying Bills in Colombia 2026 — Efecty, Baloto, Nequi, and Walk-In Options
Paying utility bills in Colombia without a local bank account or debit card is easier than you might expect. The country has a well-developed network of cash payment points that accept utility bills, phone top-ups, and other services. If you just arrived and do not have a cedula yet, you can still pay every bill in cash.
How Bill Payment Works
Colombian utility companies send paper bills (facturas) to your address each month. Each bill has a barcode and a reference number. You can pay these bills through multiple channels:
- Efecty: Cash payment at thousands of retail points
- Baloto: Cash payment at lottery/convenience kiosks
- Nequi: Digital payment through the app
- Bank app: Direct payment from your Colombian bank account
- Walk-in: Pay at the utility company's office
- Corresponsal bancario: Mini bank agents in shops
Efecty
Walk into any Efecty point with your paper bill. Hand the bill to the cashier, pay in cash, and receive a stamped receipt. The payment is processed within minutes. Efecty accepts payments for electricity, water, gas, internet, mobile phone, and many other services.
Some Efecty points charge a small convenience fee (1,000-3,000 COP) per transaction. Always get a receipt.
Baloto
Baloto is a lottery and payment services company with kiosks throughout Colombia. They accept the same range of bill payments as Efecty. Baloto kiosks are commonly found in shopping centers, supermarkets, and on street corners.
The process is the same as Efecty: bring your bill, pay in cash, get a receipt. Baloto and Efecty are interchangeable for most bill payments.
Nequi
Once you have Nequi set up (either with a cedula or a passport if the app accepts it), you can pay most utility bills directly from the app. Navigate to the bill payment section, select the utility company, enter your account number from the bill, and pay from your Nequi balance.
Nequi is particularly useful if you receive payments or transfers from friends into the app. You can use that balance to pay bills without needing a traditional bank account.
Bank App Payment
Once you have a Bancolombia or Davivienda account, the bank app is the most convenient way to pay bills. Both apps have a bill payment section where you can:
- Register your utility accounts by entering the account number from your bill
- Set up automatic payments (debito automatico) so you never miss a due date
- View payment history and download receipts
Automatic payments are the best option once you are established. Your bills are deducted from your account each month with no action required.
Walk-In Utility Offices
Every utility company has physical offices where you can pay in person. This is slower than Efecty but sometimes necessary for resolving billing disputes or setting up new service.
- EPM (Medellin): Empresas Publicas de Medellin handles electricity, water, gas, and telecom
- Codensa/Enel (Bogota): Electricity provider for Bogota
- Acueducto de Bogota: Water and sewage for Bogota
- Vanti/Gas Natural: Natural gas in Bogota and central Colombia
Corresponsal Bancario
Corresponsal bancario points are small shops authorized by banks to handle basic transactions. Bancolombia has the largest network. You can deposit cash, pay bills, and receive remittances at these locations. They are particularly useful in smaller towns where full bank branches are scarce.
Look for the bank's logo with "Corresponsal" or "Punto de Atencion" signage. The shopkeeper processes the transaction through a point-of-sale terminal.
