The Superclásico: Atlético Nacional vs Millonarios, Colombia's Biggest Game
Most of Colombia’s great rivalries are local: two clubs from the same city, sharing a stadium and a grudge. The Superclásico is the one that belongs to the whole country. Atlético Nacional of Medellín against Millonarios of Bogotá is the meeting of the two biggest, most-titled, most-supported clubs in Colombia, and the closest thing the national game has to its own version of Boca against River.
It is not a city derby. It is a regional one, and that is the point.
Why it is the big one
Nacional and Millonarios are the two heavyweights of Colombian football, the clubs with the largest fan bases nationwide and a long shared history at the top of the table. CONMEBOL and the Colombian press treat their meetings as a superclásico, a step above an ordinary derby.
The charge underneath it is regional. Antioquia against Cundinamarca. Medellín against Bogotá. The proud, business-minded, fiercely regional paisa identity of Medellín against the cooler, more cosmopolitan capital. Colombians carry that rivalry in plenty of contexts, but football is where it gets loudest. When these two play, you are not just watching a match, you are watching two cities measure themselves against each other.
Nacional play at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, a roughly 45,000-seat ground they share with their city rival Independiente Medellín. Millonarios play at the Estadio El Campín in Bogotá, capacity around 36,000, the spiritual home of football in the capital. The venue depends on who is hosting, and the away support travels in numbers, which is exactly why these games are policed so heavily.
The barras and the atmosphere
Each club has one of the country’s most powerful organized supporter movements. Nacional’s barra brava, Los del Sur, fills the south end of the Atanasio with green flags and flares. Millonarios’ is Comandos Azules, joined by Blue Rain, who turn El Campín into a blue wall. On a Superclásico day the noise, the tifos, and the choreography are as good as anything in South American football.
That intensity has a darker side, and it is worth being honest about. Colombian barra culture has a real and recent history of violence, much of it tied to an ugly economic arrangement in which clubs have funneled money to their organized supporters. In September 2024, a high-profile match at the Atanasio had to be stopped when the barras clashed; around twenty fans and a police officer were hurt, and Atlético Nacional were sanctioned with several matches behind closed doors. The Superclásico is a magnificent spectacle and a security operation at the same time. Both things are true.
How to experience it

- Sit in the occidental, the covered main stand, not the standing ends. For a game this charged, that is the call for any visitor.
- Buy early. The Superclásico sells out, and the taquilla on the day is not a plan.
- Wear neutral colors, especially as a traveling neutral with no dog in the fight. Green is Nacional, blue is Millonarios.
- Check the away-fan rules before you book. These matches sometimes run with restricted or banned visiting support.
- Plan your exit. Have a ride home that does not involve walking out into the postgame crowd.
