Petro Calls July 20 Farewell Rally as Presidential Transition Is Suspended

Colombia’s presidential transition has turned confrontational. President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, the far-right candidate who defeated Iván Cepeda in the June 21 runoff, has suspended the government transition process, accusing outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s administration of corruption. Petro, in turn, has rejected the election result, alleging fraud without providing evidence, and has called supporters to a public farewell and mobilization on July 20. The new government is still scheduled to take office on August 7.

For expats and visitors, the practical concern is public order rather than the politics. Expect large gatherings, marches, and possible road closures on and around July 20, most likely in central Bogotá (Plaza de Bolívar) and other major cities, with knock-on transit and traffic disruption. Political tension is likely to stay elevated through the August 7 inauguration.
